For the past 18 years, students from Community Academy of Philadelphia have traveled to New York City to experience Broadway. This trip gives students an opportunity many would otherwise never have, including seeing a professional Broadway production from orchestra seating and spending the day immersed in the arts and culture of New York City.
The day begins with a two-hour bus ride from Philadelphia to New York. Students look forward to this part of the trip every year because musicals are played on the bus to build excitement for the day ahead. Once in the city, students enjoy a family-style lunch at a restaurant before heading to the theater for the show. The musical incites laughter, excitement, and sometimes even tears as students experience live theater in a way they never have before. You should have seen them on Saturday after, Maybe Happy Ending!
After the show, students spend time in Times Square taking photos, shopping, and enjoying the atmosphere of New York City. For many students, it is their very first visit to Times Square, making the experience even more memorable. Before heading home to Philadelphia, the group makes one final stop for dinner along the way at a rest stop.
One of the most exciting traditions of the trip is that students, and even alumni who return each year, do not know which Broadway show they will be seeing until they are already on the bus heading to New York. The surprise adds to the day's excitement and anticipation.
Over the years, this trip has created countless memories and has become a cherished tradition for students and alumni alike. Many former students reach out every September asking if the New York Broadway trip will happen again and if they can attend once more. Many alumni have even permanently incorporated live theatre into their lives. The experience leaves a lasting impact and continues to inspire a love for the arts in our students.
