Community High School (CHS) was founded in 1980 by Mr. Joseph Proietta as an alternative school for students with children, students with gaps in education, and adjudicated students at-risk of not graduating high school. Through tenacity and hard work, Mr. Proietta kept CHS financially alive, advocating in City Council and eventually, with the support of Superintendent Constance Clayton, promoting the belief of school choice for families. In 1997, Community Academy of Philadelphia became the first charter school in Philadelphia and the second in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. CAP continues with the same mission to care for and educate the at-risk youth of Philadelphia. CAP remains one of Philadelphia’s foundational charter institutions. Today, the school operates on a 6.5‑acre campus at 1100 E. Erie Avenue in the Juniata, Kensington area, housed in a 118,000+ square foot facility. The school is accredited by the Middle States Association (Commission on Elementary and Secondary Schools) from preschool through grade 12, with continuous accreditation since 1995.
