Spotlight on Learning: Mr. Watson’s 5th Grade Class

Exploring Precepts Through the Novel Wonder

Our 5th-grade students in Mr. Watson’s class have been deeply engaged in reading the novel Wonder and exploring the powerful concept of precepts—meaningful principles or sayings that guide how we live and who we strive to be.

As part of this unit, students researched and selected personal precepts that they felt truly represent who they are and what they value. Each student chose a quote that reflects their character, goals, or personal beliefs. Many also wrote thoughtful explanations about why their chosen precept resonates with them and how it can guide their choices moving forward.

This activity not only strengthened students’ reading and critical-thinking skills but also encouraged meaningful self-reflection, empathy, and character development—key themes in Wonder.

We are proud of the honesty, insight, and maturity our students showed throughout this project. Their precepts are a beautiful reminder that kindness, courage, and personal growth begin with the principles we choose to live by. 🌟
