Scholarship Information & Resources

What are Scholarships?

A Scholarship, also known as gift aid, is money for college that does not have to be repaid.

There are two different types of scholarships:

Institutional scholarships

Colleges and trade schools can award institutional scholarships.  The amount awarded is often based on academic merit and/or financial need.  Students and parents can contact the college/trade school or review their website for institutional scholarships that may be available.  Higher education institutions may also offer scholarships that students can apply to (example is the Drexel Liberty Scholarship).  This information is also available on college websites.

Private Scholarships

Many private foundations, companies, and service groups award college scholarships.  There are thousands of scholarships available and the awards vary widely depending on the organization/foundation.  Students can use the resources below to start start searching available private scholarships.

What you should know: Some colleges have policies on how private scholarship funds are treated.  For example, if the student receives a private scholarship, the school may reduce the financial aid he/she is eligible to receive.  Students should check with the college's financial aid office to find out what their policy may be.
