Hello Families of CAP,

We have just finished our second full week of school.  We continue to be appreciative of the collective efforts of our school team and our families that are making it possible to implement our current instructional model. We continue to improve processes and troubleshoot issues, and we thank you for your patience as we do so.

I wanted to bring an issue to your attention that has surfaced since we have opened the school.  As students are learning the new parameters of learning in school and from home, we need to clarify expectations.  Students are not permitted to take pictures of students or teachers on Google Meets or Zoom.  Students are not permitted to record Google Meets or Zoom in any form.  Students who engage in these behaviors will be addressed through the Code of Conduct.  This will be treated as a violation of the Acceptable Use Policy and the Bullying and Harassment policy, and repeated infractions will result in suspension from the learning environment.

Parents who are able to should consider keeping their child’s cell phone during school hours as it is an additional distraction during instruction.  The primary vehicle for pictures being shared is through students’ Snapchat accounts.  If you need more information about Snapchat, click here for a Common Sense Media review of the app.  Snapchat has largely replaced texting for students, and much of their social communication occurs through Snapchat.  Any concerns of cyberbullying can be reported to counselors through email (K-8) Rebecca Keil at rkeil@communityacademy.org or (9-12) Lisette Rivera at lrivera@communityacademy.org

Some important Elementary School reminders:

  • Just a reminder that your child must complete and submit the attendance form to be marked present for the day. Attending the Live lesson does not take the place of submitting the attendance form.

CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL OF PHILADELPHIA-YOUTH ESSAY COMPETITION

On behalf of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Global Health Center, they will be holding the first-ever Youth Essay Competition this year! Winners of the competition will be invited to read their essays at our upcoming 12th Annual Pediatric Global Health Conference (Oct. 9-10, 2020), which will be held virtually.

The conference theme is “Power, Politics, and Pediatrics: Assessing the Impact of Governance on Global Child Health.” We want to hear directly from the youth (Grades 9 – 12) about how different health policies and politics have impacted their health and/or their lives (see attached flyer).

We kindly ask that you share the attached flyer as widely as possible with your high school students. This is a fantastic opportunity as winners will receive:

  • A scholarship to attend the 2020 12th Annual CHOP Pediatric Global Health Conference (carried over to the 2021 conference since the 2020 conference will be held virtually)

  • An opportunity to read their essay to all attendees at the conference

  • A copy of the Nelson Mandela book, “Nelson Mandela in His Own Words,” signed by a co-editor of the book and keynote speaker at the conference, Dr. Wilmot James

  • Publication of their essay in the CHOP Global Health Newsletter

Submissions must be sent via email to globalhealthcenter@email.chop.edu by Sunday, September 13, 2020.
