For College and/or Trade School

This is a suggested checklist for students to follow. Applying for colleges and trade schools can seem like a scary process. If you follow our guidelines, it will help make the process seem much more simple.

November Checklist

  • Submit applications for admissions and scholarships BEFORE the deadlines. Be sure to include the required fees with your applications. Make copies of everything that you send through the mail and/or online. Keep organized files.
  • When sending applications, remember that schools want copies of your transcripts (Official Copies of Grades). See your Guidance Counselor to have those sent.
Dec

December Checklist

  • Continue sending out college and/or trade school applications. You should start wrapping this up by the end of December
  • Work with your parents or guardians to gather financial documents and materials for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Attend the Financial Aid Workshop being held at CAP on December 10, 2007

January Checklist

  • Complete and submit the FAFSA form to apply for stat e, federal, and instiutional grants and loans.
  • Confirm that all of your college admissions materials have been received

February / March Checklists

  • If schools are requesting your first quarter grades, make sure that the counselor has sent those.
  • Confirm that all of your financial aid materials have been received
  • When you receive your Student Aid Report (SAR), check it for any mistakes. Return the SAR If, and only if, you need to make corrections. (The SAR is your feedback from the FAFSA).
  • Be sure to follow the stated directions in all financial aid correspondence that you will receive from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA).
  • Continue to complete and submit scholarship applications before deadlines.

April / May / June Checklists

  • Maintain organized files of all correspondence that you receive regarding admissions and financial aid.
  • Identify a financial aid contact at each college where you have been accepted. Check every few weeks on the status of your financial aid package.
  • Reply promptly to acceptance letters from colleges. The universal candidate reply date is May 1.
  • Have final grades sent to colleges you have chosen - See Guidance Counselor
  • Pay attention to Freshman Orientation dates and any requirements such as placement tests.

  • Get Ready for College - Meet all class registration deadlines. Be aware of due dates for tuition, room and board fees, and other expenses.
  • YOU ARE ALMOST THERE - Contact your future roommate, pack your bags, and have a great college experience!
